Probabilistic Modelling for Incorporating Uncertainty in Least Cost Path Results: a Postdictive Roman Road Case Study

چکیده
Abstract The movement of past peoples in the landscape has been studied extensively through use least cost path (LCP) analysis. Although methodological issues applying LCP analysis archaeology have frequently discussed, effect DEM error on results not fully assessed. Due to this, reliability result is undermined, jeopardising how well method can confidently be used model movement. To strengthen results, this research proposes Monte Carlo simulation as a for incorporating and propagating effects results. Focusing vertical error, random fields are calculated incorporated into documented reproducible modelling process using R package leastcostpath . By graphically communicating impact probabilistic LCPs, uncertainty taken account when interpreting LCPs. applied Roman road case study, finding that incorporation identification multiple ‘least cost’ routes within landscape. Furthermore, deviation between roman suggests location was influenced by additional factors other than minimising energy expenditure. This finds derived viable graphical communication caused input data process. Therefore, it recommended LCPs become default approach contains errors.

Incorporating uncertainty in predictive species distribution modelling.
Motivated by the need to solve ecological problems (climate change, habitat fragmentation and biological invasions), there has been increasing interest in species distribution models (SDMs). Predictions from these models inform conservation policy, invasive species management and disease-control measures. However, predictions are subject to uncertainty, the degree and source of which is often u...

متن کاملIncorporating psychological influences in probabilistic cost analysis
Today's typical probabilistic cost analysis assumes an "ideal" project that is devoid of the human and organizational considerations that heavily influence the success and cost of real-world projects. In the real world “Money Allocated Is Money Spent” (MAIMS principle); cost underruns are rarely available to protect against cost overruns while task overruns are passed on to the total project co...
متن کاملA Framework for Modelling Probabilistic Uncertainty in Rainfall Scenario Analysis
Predicting future probable values of model parameters, is an essential pre-requisite for assessing model decision reliability in an uncertain environment. Scenario Analysis is a methodology for modelling uncertainty in water resources management modelling. Uncertainty if not considered appropriately in decision making will decrease reliability of decisions, especially in long-term planning. One...
متن کاملPath Finding under Uncertainty through Probabilistic Inference
We introduce a new approach to solving path-finding problems under uncertainty by representing them as probabilistic models and applying domain-independent inference algorithms to the models. This approach separates problem representation from the inference algorithm and provides a framework for efficient learning of path-finding policies. We evaluate the new approach on the Canadian Traveller ...
